HBO asks audiences to hold on to every moment with the first trailer for the upcoming adaptation of the celebrated romance novel, The Time Traveler’s Wife. Led by Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie as the titular wife Clare Abshire and Divergent actor Theo James as the titular time traveler, Henry DeTamble, the series is due to premiere on HBO later this year. Adapted by Steven Moffat from the beloved novel of the same name, The Time Traveler’s Wife follows the intricate and magical love story between Clare (Rose Leslie of HBO’s Game of Thrones), and Henry (Theo James of Divergent), and a marriage with a problem…time travel.
The trailer captures many elements from the source material rather well, particularly the stress of Henry’s sudden time traveling. The series though will rise or fall based on the strength of its leads, and so far it looks like HBO’s serial adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife may have chosen well in this regard. But, aptly, only time will tell.
The Time Traveler’s Wife Will Adapt the Beloved 2003 Novel by Audrey Niffenegger
The series will adapt the novel of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger. Published in 2003, The Time Traveler’s Wife was very well-received by critics, eventually becoming a bestseller and winning the Exclusive Books Boeke Prize and a British Book Award. The story is told via alternating first-person perspectives, beginning with Clare Abshire, a fiery, clever, and unstoppable young woman, who for most of her life has had an amazing secret. Since she was 6 years old, Clare has had an imaginary friend: a kind and funny man, sometimes old, sometimes young, who appears in the woods behind her house and tells her tales of the future.
This mysterious man is of course Henry DeTamble, who has been a time traveler since he was just 8 years old. Far from being a superpower, it is in fact a condition. He simply cannot help leaping through time. Sometimes, when Henry is stressed or worried — and sometimes for no reason at all — he loses his grip on the current moment and falls naked into the past or the future. The novel has been adapted for live-action before, with 2009’s The Time Traveler’s Wife starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. The big-screen outing received mixed reviews, with fans of the book no doubt hopeful of what HBO and Steven Moffat will achieve with their take on the material.
The supporting cast for The Time Traveler’s Wife is made up of Desmin Borges as Gomez, one of Clare’s best friends; Natasha Lopez is Charisse; Caitlin Shorey and Everleigh McDonell as younger versions of Clare Abshire; Michael Park as Philip Abshire, Clare’s father; Jaime Ray Newman as Lucille Abshire, Clare’s mother; Brian Altemus and Jason David as younger versions of Henry DeTamble; and Chelsea Frei is Ingrid.
The Time Traveler’s Wife is being directed by David Nutter, who is best known for helming pilot episodes, but has notably received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, for his work on the HBO series Game of Thrones.
The Time Traveler’s Wife is set to premiere on HBO in May 2022.
