For years now, Lily Collins has been stunning audiences with her capability as an actress and performer. The 32-year-old actress has taken on roles in both film and television, allowing her to work with some of the most talented actors in the industry including Oscar-winner Gary Oldman, Julia Roberts, and Amanda Seyfried. One of the most admirable aspects of Collins’ career is how diverse her body of work is. Each role she steps into is completely different from the next, spanning across genres from very serious dramas to light-hearted romantic comedies.
One of the most acclaimed works Collins has been a part of is David Fincher’s 2020 Best Picture nominee Mank. The black-and-white modern drama followed the true story of American screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his journey to finishing the screenplay for Citizen Kane. Oldman stars as Mankiewicz himself alongside Seyfried, who plays Marion Davies, and Collins, who played Rita Alexander. In addition to her great work on film, Collins is probably best known for her Netflix original series Emily In Paris, which became an instant success after its initial release in 2020. With its recent renewal for a third and fourth season, the icon that is Emily Cooper doesn’t seem to be leaving our screens anytime soon. Here are 8 of Lily Collins’ best performances, ranked.
8 Mirror Mirror
In 2012, Lily Collins starred alongside Julia Roberts and Armie Hammer in the fantasy family film Mirror Mirror. Collin’s ability to play Snow White, a classic princess who everyone knows and loves, is a perfect example of her versatility as an actor. Some of her best-known roles are either in heavy dramas or a Netflix Original series targeted towards young adults, yet she is still extremely believable and achieves great success as the orphaned princess. Mirror Mirror grossed over $180 million at the box office and received a 50% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
7 Love, Rosie
Lily Collins is no stranger to the rom-com and her recent work on Emily in Paris made her one of the most successful rom-com actresses from the past year. But before Emily Cooper, she starred as Rosie Dunne in director Christian Ditter’s Love, Rosie, released in 2014. Rosie and her best friend Alex Stewart, played by Sam Claflin, are separated when Alex moves to another country, forcing the two to grapple with the struggles of being in a long-distance relationship. At its core, this movie is lighthearted and an easy watch due to the blissful performances Collins and her co-stars give.
6 The Blind Side
The Blind Side is a sport/drama packed with great actors and performances. Sandra Bullock, Quinton Aaron, Jae Head, Tim McGraw, Lily Collins, Ray McKinnon, and Kathy Bates star in the movie directed by John Lee Hancock. Like many of Collins’ works from the late 2000s and early 2010s, this is a lighthearted feel-good film that anyone could get wrapped into. The film is about family, love, and acceptance, and explores what beautiful relationships can occur when we open our hearts to one another, choosing kindness over everything.
5 Stuck in Love
Another Lily Collins romantic comedy on our list is Josh Boone’s 2012 film Stuck in Love. The movie revolves around a family dealing with the many phases of love, good and bad. We see how each character is affected by the downfalls of love, and great performances are given by Collins, Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connelly, Nat Wolff, Logan Lerman, and Kristen Bell. Rom-coms have a tendency of being cliché, but Stuck in Love stands out because of its humor and relatively good jokes.
In 2020, David Fincher released the black and white drama Mank based on the true story of Herman J. Mankiewicz, the Academy Award-winning Hollywood screenwriter. Gary Oldman gives an incredible performance as Mank alongside the talented Amanda Seyfried and Lily Collins, who play Marion Davies and Rita Alexander, respectively. In the film, Mank is pushing himself to finish the screenplay for the movie we know today as Citizen Kane, while also suffering from alcoholism. Mank was nominated for ten Academy Awards in 2021 and took home two Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Production design.
3 Emily in Paris
The Netflix Original series Emily in Paris became an instant hit after season one’s initial release in 2020, and has maintained popularity over the past two years, with season two gaining over 58 million streams. Lily Collins carries the comedy/romance, giving a refreshing performance as our leading lady, Emily Cooper. Her character is a marketing executive from Chicago, who gets her life flipped upside down when her company offers her a job in Paris. Emily navigates love, friendship, and success in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. From Emily’s clothes to her relationships, and the fabulous events she attends, fans everywhere dream about picking up and starting a life just like hers.
2 Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile
Both Lily Collins and Zac Efron give the performances of their careers as Liz Kendall and the infamous American serial killer Ted Bundy, respectively in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile. Academy Award nominee Joe Berlinger directed the project, which was eventually released on Netflix in 2019. The audience is walked through the chilling relationship between Liz and Ted, getting to see firsthand how such a “normal” guy became one of the most brutal murderers the United States has ever seen. All the actors involved in the film received praise and critical acclaim for their performances, making it one of the most notable aspects of the film. The real-life chemistry and friendship Collins and Efron share makes their on-screen relationship even more believable.
1 To the Bone
Showing anorexia and eating disorders in general on film is a challenging thing. There are many flaws with the 2017 drama/comedy To the Bone in terms of properly representing what it’s like to live with this terrible life-threatening illness, but that should not take away from the remarkable performance Lily Collins gives in the film. Not only did she undergo a major physical transformation to prepare for the role of Ellen, but she was more authentic and raw in the portrayal than ever. To the Bone may not be Lily Collins’s highest-grossing or well-known project, but it is certainly one of her most meaningful and memorable performances.
