It takes a long time to build up a rumor in Hollywood, but just a second to put it to bed, as pop diva Cher has proven. For almost a year, there has been speculation that the Oscar-winning star could be about to join the cast of Hocus Pocus 2 as a fourth Sanderson sister, following comments made by the film’s director Ann Fletcher about wanting a “stunning and ageless beauty like Cher” for a role in the spooky sequel. While the original Sanderson sisters, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are all back to reprise their roles in the Disney+ feature, it seems that after all this time, the involvement of Cher is now confirmed as being nothing but speculation.
Cher herself took to Twitter to confirm that the initial rumors and various amounts of fan casting speculation were not true. More impressive, she managed to shut the whole thing down with the simple reply of, “No Babe.” As others pointed out, following the first mention of Cher in relation to the sequel by Fletcher, a lot of fans of both the film and the singer jumped on the possibility of her being cast in the movie and created a whole scenario around her possible inclusion. In a few minutes, though, the whole thing was pulled apart by the person who should know better than anyone if she is involved with Hocus Pocus 2 or not.
Naturally, those who dreamed of seeing Cher witching it up with Midler, Parker and Najimy, are sorely disappointed by the star’s confirmation that she is definitely not a part of the upcoming film, but with so many other Cher movies of the past to enjoy, it surely won’t take long for them to get over the “could have been” moment.
Cher Has Already Played a Witch on Screen, So It Was Not Too Out There to Think She Could Again
Of course, Cher has previously played a witch on the big screen, having had one of the lead roles in the dark comic fantasy The Witches of Eastwick opposite Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jack Nicholson. Although still best known for her iconic songs, Cher’s role in The Witches of Eastwick was one of many over her career.
Her biggest screen hits have included Mask, Moonstruck, Mermaids and the 2018 Mamma Mia! sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. She also made a voice cameo as herself in Bobbleheads: The Movie in 2020. While the speculation about her joining the Hocus Pocus 2 cast was always on very thin ground, it is certainly possible to see Cher getting involved with the mayhem as a Sanderson sister to put the others to shame when it comes to grace and appearance. It would have certainly been a new dynamic to bring to the sequel, which mostly seems to be retreading the path and plot of the 1993 original movie. However, as one of the most anticipated titles coming to Disney+ this year, there is no doubt the film will prove to be another big hit for the streaming platform even without the involvement of Cher. You can catch Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+ this Halloween.
