Marvel’s Avengers’ Spider-Man Doesn’t Come With Story Missions Because It’s PlayStation Exclusive

PS4 & PS5

Marvel’s Avengers‘ Spider-Man doesn’t come with story missions akin to those for Kate Bishop, Hawkeye, and Black Panther (hence, it’s called a Hero Mission). As previously explained, With Great Power Hero Event will let you “experience Spider-Man’s story through unlockable challenges woven throughout the Avengers Initiative.” Now, Crystal Dynamics has explained to IGN why Spider-Man doesn’t have story missions: it’s exclusive to PlayStation.

“We want to spend our efforts on content that everyone can enjoy, so we chose to spend a lot of our energy on the Klaw raid that’s coming up at the same time,” Gameplay Director Philippe Therien, said. “Really that’s a simple decision for us. Spider-Man can play all the content, but then we release a piece of content that’s good on all platforms. Really that was a decision that’s been that way since the beginning.”

Backlash ensued when Spider-Man’s PlayStation exclusivity was first announced. Crystal Dynamics said at the time that it had no control over the decision, which stemmed from a business deal between Square Enix and Sony since the latter holds the rights to the Spider-Man franchise.

“It comes back to the relationship with PlayStation and Marvel,” studio Co-Head Scot Amos said back in 2020. “We happened to be… once you can execute and deliver, when it comes down to choices of where and what Spider-Man can be, that’s a relationship question that PlayStation absolutely has the rights to, that as you guys know, with Sony’s ownership there, and Marvel with Sony saying, ‘Hey, this is something we can do. This is something we can do on this platform.’”
