We know visuals novels aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, yet there are probably just as many gamers out there who lap up the opportunity to kick back with an hour-long read as there are those who totally turn their nose up at the idea. But when you come to Xbox, PlayStation and Switch with a number of awards already under your belt, you do at least deserve a chance. Welcome, Dull Grey.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, PS Vita and Nintendo Switch, Dull Grey has previously been handed awards covering the ‘most innovative game’ and ‘best use of multimedia’. With inspiration firmly decided by the worlds of the Strugatsky brothers, Dostoevsky’s works and Tarkovsky’s movies, if you’re in the market for a new visual novel, this may well suffice.

Of course, our full review of Dull Grey on Xbox is here and ready to tempt you in either way, and we highly advise you give that a read before dropping your cash on a download. If you are sold though, the super-low £4.19 asking price makes this all the more bearable, as it delivers a tale of a mother, her son and their search for happiness in and amongst the foggiest of mountains.

The overall focus of this tale sits on whether the son should become a lamplighter, or a tallyman – and honestly, that’s pretty much the only choice you’ll be found making throughout this adventure. But only by making this choice will Dull Grey become clear, injecting some colour into proceedings along the way.  With a retro-futuristic world holding the tale together, a delightful visual style helping the immersion and that single choice promises the opportunity to take in multiple endings, there may yet be reason to take in Dull Grey.

Features include:

  • The drama of everyday life shown against the background of a retro-futuristic world controlled by the Progress-program
  • An unusual mechanic of a single choice leading to different game endings
  • A visual style tracing back to Soviet graphics of the 20s
  • Inspired by the worlds of Strugatsky brothers, Dostoevsky’s works and Tarkovsky’s movies

You’ll find Dull Grey kicking around the digital stores for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S (that’ll be the Xbox Store), PS4, PS5, PS Vita (yes, really!) and Nintendo Switch. Let us know if you decide to pick it up.

Game Description:

Dull Grey is an award-winning visual novel about growing up. It tells about mother and son, free will, and the search for happiness among foggy mountains and grey pipes. You will be making one and the same choice again and again deciding who the son should become – a lamplighter or a tallyman. At first it may seem that the situation leaves you no choice at all. But don’t jump to conclusions, take a moment to think it over and then, perhaps, you’ll see your story in full color.
