The CW orders NAOMI pilot from DuVernay & Blankenship

Comic News

Back in December it was reported that Ava DuVernay was teaming up with Arrow writer and co-exec producer Jill Blankenship to develop a television series for the CW based on DC Comics’s Naomi. Now, per Deadline, The CW has ordered a pilot for the character, who starred in her own Eisner Award-winning 2019 miniseries co-written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker and illustrated by Jamal Campbell.

Here’s the description for the Naomi show according to Deadline:

The show follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.

Bendis, Walker, and Campbell have teased a sequel miniseries for the original Naomi series, though with all three of them having other commitments it may be a while before that arrives. In the meantime the character will be featured in the Justice League lineup when Brian Michael Bendis takes over the title with issue #59.

Bendis, Walker, and DuVernay took to social media to share their reactions on the Naomi show news. According to Bendis via Instagram, “this is one of the fastest developments in the history of comics and you can thank yourselves. Readers like you taking a chance on a new character makes stuff like this happen.”

Naomi isn’t the only female heroine DC Comics property in the works. The CW network is also developing a Wonder Girl show based Yara Flor, from Berlanti Productions and showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez.

If Naomi is ordered to series, it would become the third CW DC television series to feature a Black solo lead character, behind Cress Williams as Black Lightning and Javicia Leslie, who made her debut as the all-new Batwoman a few weeks ago.
