The Disney+ series will be developed alongside Black Panther 2, the forthcoming sequel to one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most successful movies to date.

The first Black Panther starred the late Chadwick Boseman in the titular eponymous role. However, the actor unexpectedly died of colon cancer in August 2020.

An agreement between Proximity Media and Disney TV

The deal creates a five-year exclusive agreement between Coogler’s Proximity Media and Disney TV, allowing Proximity Media the opportunity to develop additional small screen projects for Disney’s non-Disney+ outlets.

Rounding out the principals of Proximity Media are Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Archie Davis, Peter Nicks, and Ludwig Göransson (Disney+ devotees may recognize Göransson’s name from the credits of The Mandalorian, which he scores, a gig that he landed thanks in part to a recommendation from the Black Panther director, who was a college roommate – see the seventh episode of the first season of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian for more info).

A Possible Inspiration

World of Wakanda #2

Little is known about the Disney+ series at this juncture, beyond the fact that it will be set in Wakanda.

However, one possible source of inspiration may be Black Panther: World of Wakanda, the 2016 comic by Roxane Gay, Yona Harvey, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Alitha E. Martinez, Afua Richardson, Rachelle Rosenberg, Tamra Bonvillain and Joe Sabino.

World of Wakanda – which spun out of (and expands upon) the superb 2016 main series Black Panther run by Coates, Brian Stelfreeze, Laura Martin, and Sabino – follows several storylines, including one about lovers Ayo and Aneka, who are both members of the Dora Milaje, and another about Zenzi, the metahuman revolutionary.

World of Speculation
